Listed below in alphabetical order by cheese name is a simplified pronunciation guide to various cheese names. With this method you can get a reasonable facsimile of the original pronunciation. Ok, maybe not so accurate to the original language but definitely good enough to make yourself understood at most cheese counters in the US.
This is not an exhaustive list – I’ll be adding more names as I come across them in my cheese hunts. You mention Gjetost at the beginning of the article — which got me all excited, as I love this dark, rich goat’s milk cheese from Norway, and only get a chance to sample it at xmastime — but it’s nowhere to be found on the list. WTF?
Generik – gjetost is listed under “Ekte Gjetost” which roughly translates to “real goat cheese.” There are other similar cheeses from Norway that go by different names. I haven’t run into them so I did not include them on my list. If you do a “ctrl + F” on your browser and start typing gjetost – it should bring you to that entry. BTW – you can get gjetost at several places all year round in San Francisco or online. Enjoy your cheese!
